Catherine May Vondrak is a West Country based artist who specialises in mixed media canvases, Gothic Illustrations, birds and assemblage. Catherine is mostly self taught and after studying a BA in History with Economics at York University, she went on to attend some art classes at the historic arts school at Porthmeor Studios, St.Ives. After a period as working as a freelance artist, Catherine had a stint working in the film and television industries. After studying an MA in Television Production at Falmouth University, she delved deeper into the world of film by extending her artistic abilities into the make-up department. She completed the Peter King Intensive make-up course at the Bath Academy of Media Make-up as well as training at Pinewood Studios, London in Prosthetic Zombie Make-up, Lifecasting and barbering. She still retains a particular interest for prosthetic make-up, especially horror and fantasy. Catherine then worked on productions including ‘Sherlock’. ‘Poldark’, ‘Alice through the Looking Glass’ and award winning Shorts, before turning her attention back towards her artwork.

Catherine has now set up ‘The Dark Moon and The Raven’ where she sells an array of gothic inspired, unique handmade items and paintings. She has gone on to curate several solo exhibitions and continues to exhibit in the South West where she is a member of the Arts Club in St.Ives and an associate member of 44AD Artspace in Bath. She also attends many fairs including Bath Humbug and the Glastonbury Faery Fayre. Apart from art, Catherine also enjoys writing stories and poetry. She often accompanies her paintings with a number of her short stories and poems to add depth to the visual narrative.

Catherine’s inspiration is drawn from many sources including from her fascination of birds and her favourite authors. She finds the poems of Edgar Allan Poe really ignites her creativity and ideas. She has a fascination with Gothic fiction and ghost stories as well as a partiality towards skulls and skeletons! Catherine also finds influence in folklore and fairies and feels that these are elements she often includes in her artwork as well as her writing. Her love of fantasy, the strange and sometimes the macabre are the driving forces behind her creativity. She can also include film directors such as Tim Burton and authors including J K Rowling and J R R Tolkien as influences as well.
