About the Artist
Catherine May Vondrak
Catherine May Vondrak is a West Country based artist who specialises in mixed media canvases and assemblage. Catherine is mostly self-taught and after studying a BA in History with Economics at York University, she went on to attend classes at the historic arts school at Porthmeor Studios, St. Ives in order to amass basic techniques. She went on to curate three solo exhibitions in Bath. The first entitled ‘Transformation’ and the second ‘In Dreams’ and then ‘The Midnight Garden’, where she displayed an array of her paintings, installations and poetry. She continues to exhibit in the South West and is a member of the Arts Club in St. Ives and Studio 44AD in Bath. She also has a portfolio page on The Artists and Illustrators website. Apart from art Catherine also enjoys writing poetry and stories and she is currently working on a series of short stories based on the legends of Dartmoor.
Catherine’s inspiration is drawn from many sources including from her fascination of birds and her favourite authors. She finds the poems of Edgar Allan Poe really ignites her creativity and ideas. She has a fascination with Gothic fiction and ghost stories as well as a partiality towards skulls and skeletons! Catherine also finds influence in folklore and fairies and feels that these are elements she often includes in her artwork as well as her writing. Her love of fantasy, the strange and sometimes the macabre are the driving forces behind her creativity.
It was these interests and artistic abilities that led Catherine to peruse a career within the film and television industry, most notably within the make-up and hair department. After studying an MA in Television Production at Falmouth University she went on to attend the Bath Academy of Media Make-up. She recently completed the Peter King (Oscar winning make-up designer for Lord of the Rings) make-up course and won a Halloween make-up competition judged by Peter King, for her entry ‘Lady of the Web’, where she designed and made the make-up, prosthetics and costume. She has also trained at Pinewood Studios in London, in Prosthetic Zombie make-up and Lifecasting. Catherine has a particular passion for prosthetic make-up and this is an area she wishes to learn more about.
Catherine has since worked on productions such as ‘Alice through the Looking Glass’ and ‘Sherlock’. She aspires to become a designer one day and has a dream to design the make-up and prosthetics for a Steampunk themed film…hopefully directed by Tim Burton!
